Name, image & likeness

NIL, and where a verified record fits in.

A plain-language overview of name, image, and likeness for young athletes, and how a trusted record helps.

Name, image, and likeness (NIL) is an athlete's right to benefit from their own identity: their name, their picture, their reputation. Rules have been opening up quickly, and in a growing number of states and governing bodies young athletes can now take part, within limits designed to keep it separate from their school or team.

The basics

  • NIL is about the athlete's own identity, not their team's.
  • Where it is allowed, it usually must stay separate from school marks, uniforms, and facilities.
  • Rules vary by state and by association, and they are still changing.

Because the details differ from place to place, athletes and families should review the rules that apply to them before pursuing anything.

Where a verified record fits in

NIL rewards athletes who can show who they are and what they have done. A verified, consent-controlled Scouting Futures record is a natural foundation for an athlete's NIL profile: real, trusted provenance the athlete and their family control.

To be clear: Scouting Futures does not broker NIL deals. We provide verification and visibility. The opportunities, and the choices, belong to the athlete and their family.
